The Global T20 Canada league is about to start, which is Canada’s own version of the successful IPL. This will be the first edition of the tournament and is being called Global T20 Canada. With this Canada entered into the world of cricket and what better way there is then to host the most elite cricketers in a domestic tournament.
Six teams are confirmed to participate in the Global T20 Canada league. 22 matches will be played from 28 June to 15 July with the final at July 15.
The tournament is getting highlighted because Steve Smith and David Warner are making a comeback. These players have been banned from any sort of international cricket by ICC for 12 months following their ball-tempering scandal and that lead to their absence from the IPL 2018. But they were drafted for the Global T20 Canada starting from 28 June.
They will be joined by some other major stalwarts of the game like Darren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Shahid Afridi.
Out of the six competing teams in Global T20 Canada 2018, five teams were selected by the random draft while the sixth team will consist of all players from the Caribbean Islands. It is being named as Cricket West Indies B Team.
It was a 16 rounds draft where Toronto Nationals managed to grab the first pick in form the two-time T20 world cup winning champion Darren Sammy. They also picked Keiron Pollard.
The second pick went to Vancouver Knights who went far heights to purchase the “Universal Boss”- Chris Gayle. They also bought Evin Lewis and Andre Russell.
Winnipeg Hawks were the third to pick and they also went with another Caribbean and the very effective all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and Lendl Simmons. They also have David Miller and Darren Bravo.
Montreal Tigers managed to possess the finest T20 bowlers in Lasith Malinga and Sunil Narine and some all-rounders like Thisara Perrera and Mohammad Hafeez.
Edmonton Royals went with the Boom-Boom Shahid Afridi along with Sohail Tanveer, Mohammad Irfan but they also have Chris Lynn, Luke Ronchi and Christiaan Jonker.
David Warner was selected by Winnipeg Hawks in the third round, Whereas, Steve Smith was selected in the second round by Toronto nationals.
Out of the 1500 registration from worldwide, each team picked 14 players, whereas, each team picked 2 out of the 10 big names.
Global T20 Canada’s inaugral season will also feature star coaches apart from the players and they will manage and lead the 5 teams. Tom Moody is all set to coach Montreal Tigers. Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Akram will coach Edmonton Royals. Phill Simmons will coach Toronto Nationals, Waqar Younis will be the coach of Winnipeg Hawks and Donovan Miller will take care of the coaching responsibilites of Vancouver Knights.
The tournament starts on June 28 and ends on July 15.
All the matches Global T20 Canada will be played at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in Toronto which holds the capacity of 7,000 seats.
