FIFA World Cup Trophy is surely as much intriguing as it is astonishing. It is a 14.5 inches tall trophy and it weighs 6.175 kilograms. The winners of the World Cup finals are given the magnificent Gold FIFA World Cup Trophy. But this was not always the case. Prior to 1974, a Jules Rimet trophy was given to the World Cup winners.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy was first introduced at the 1974 World Cup hosted by West Germany. This 18- Karat gold’s exquisite trophy was designed by the Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. He described his creation saying,”The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory.”

What is a Jules Rimet trophy?

Prior to Gazzaniga’s new take on the World Cup trophy, a different trophy was rewarded to the winners. It was called a Jules Rimet Trophy which has a gold-plated sterling silver and it featured a marble base along.

FIFA appointed a french guy named Abel Lafleur to design the trophy which became the symbol of the World Cups prior to 1974. They named the trophy ‘Victory’ and it has a sculpture of Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike and she holds a octagonal cup above her head.

It was later renamed to the Jules Rimet Trophy in 1946, honouring the former FIFA president Jules Rimet who had an unparalleled role in the establishment of World Cup tournaments.
