National Mixed Double pairs Chan Peng Soon – Goh Liu Ying has won the US Open title. This is their second title of the year after winning the Thailand Masters earlier this year.
This may not be their biggest tournament but they said they stil are happy to be crowned as US Champions. They admitted that they still have to hit the top form but winning the US Open has boost their confidence to a great extent.
They are now looking forward to a great performance next week in Malaysia Open and the Indonesia Open tournament in August.
The former National No. 1 grabbed a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Marvin Emil Seidel-Linda Efler of Germany at California State University in Fullerton, USA on Sunday.
The Malaysian Mixed doubles banked a total amount of $11,850 in the prize money whereas the runner-ups Germans won a little less $5,700
This is their second title this year since they came back together as a couple this year. Peng Soon – Liu Yung won the Thailand Masters and could settled for second posititon in Australian Open last month.
With this win, Chan Peng Soon and Liu Yang have marked their names as the first Malaysian pair to have won the mixed double in tournament’s history. Although, Lee Chong Wei won the Men’s single for Malaysia in 2015
Peng Soon said, “It may not be a major title, but winning a tournament is always good for your confidence, especially with a few major tournaments coming up in the next couple of months… in our case the Malaysia Open and the Asian Games,”
“It has been a great tournament for us. We didn’t really stretch ourselves, probably only gave 70-80 per cent, so hopefully it gets better after this.
“We want to build on this strong performance here and try to do better in bigger events, starting with the Malaysia Open.”
The Pair has won the 2016 Rio Olympics Silver Medal. The tremendous duo was split last year because of Liu Ying sustained a shoulder injury last year. He went through a shoulder surgery later in Germany and is now as good as new.
Malaysian Badminton Association reunited them earlier this year and they went off with a flying start winning the first tournament of the year- Thailand Masters in January.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying also went to the finals of the Australian Open last month but couldn’t win, now they will be focusing on Malaysian Open which starts from June 26 and will end on July 1.
